Restoring History at the First Ukrainian Assembly of God

About the Project

This project aims to fully restore the historic building at 9 East 7th Street (59 Cooper Square), known as the Cornerstone, First Ukrainian Assembly of God. Originally constructed in 1867 as the Metropolitan Savings Bank, it was designed by renowned architect Carl Pfeiffer and praised as Manhattan's first fireproof building. Acquired by the First Ukrainian Evangelical Pentecostal Church in 1937, the building has been a religious space since. Recent NYC Department of Buildings violations in 2021 prompted a comprehensive Building Envelope Survey in 2016. In response, the Church hired preservation experts in 2022 to assess and plan the rehabilitation needs, including the repair of the metal cornice, mansard roof elements, wood windows, metal trim, and marble walls. This project aims to fully rehabilitate the historic building envelope, ensuring its preservation.
